Oscars 2018 has been a difficult race with many amusing films that are competing for the Best Picture. While it did end on a whimper, I would say that ‘The Shape of Water’ is undoubtedly the deserving picture of the year. It is not only a conventional choice, but many have predicted it given the kind of cinematic experience that it has offered to us. The Academy has done the right thing by going with it now. Despite all the rumors and gossips, Oscar 2018 has ended on a decent note. While we move on from it, here is a list of 2019 predictable movies that you should know!

Which movie will win Oscars 2019 Best Picture?

The first question that remains in the limelight is, what kind of movie will grab the Oscar, this year? Netflix has released Roma a couple of months back and I was sure that it will be the front runner for the Best Picture category. But then, I saw more films being released and after watching them, I am no longer sure of anything. Apart from Roma, there are two more films which stood probably at the top prize of the Academy Awards. Green Book and, A Star is Born are steadily going to the top of the charts. A thing that people have to know about Oscars is that they are trying to make political and social statements with the movies they select, rather than just rewarding the best movies. On these factors, we can’t discard Black Panther and Blackkklansman (Both has black in it and black is Oscar’s favorite). Yes, you heard it right. Both these movies are now serious in the race of Best Picture.

On the other hand, there are some serious contenders which I thought would win the Oscar and which turned out to be pondering at the last. The first of such movies to suffer from the brunt is First Man, which is also one of the favorite movies in this year. I don’t know why, but the cold reception that the movie has been receiving has amused me. The poor box-office performance has sealed the fate. Following this movie is the Mary Queen of the scots, which had high expectations but it did not go anywhere. While this film has received immense acclaim from the critics, it failed to receive a positive response from the audience which is needed to catapult the movie into the race. Towards the end of the race, we also had a couple of new films Vice and Mary Poppins Returns; both of these films benefitting from the strong display they have given at the Golden Globe.

List of Oscars 2019 Best Picture Nominations:

#1 ROMA:

Director: Alfonso Cuarón
Starring: Yalitza Aparicio, Marina de Tavira, Diego Cortina Autrey
Synopsis: A story that chronicles a year in the life of a middle-class family in Mexico City in the early 1970s.

Where to Watch? Netflix.

Roma is one of the very few moving films that you will find in the contemporary era. The film is personal and it has beautiful frames that narrate the story of the middle-class family. After making a film like ‘Gravity’, we should commend Alfonso Cuaron for making a very personal tale. He has decided to touch a lot of hearts with Roma and well he succeeded in doing it. If the thing about beauty is Joy, Roma will make sure that the loveliness and brilliance of a family will not be moved into nothingness.

This semi-autobiography of Curaon is plotted in Mexico during the 1970s, where he has spent most of his childhood. The film is shot in black and white. It doesn’t have any stars and has all the dialogues in Spanish while giving you a chance to see the wings spreading beyond the ceiling. He has shown his brilliance in putting the context of the broken family which is trying to survive in a broken world. Where did he excel? Well, he did more than just breaking the walls of class, culture, and language of the craft. He has reached all the audience despite their nationality while making them feel for this heartfelt tribute.

#2 A Star is Born:

Director: Bradley Cooper
Cast: Bradley Cooper, Lady Gaga, Stefani Germanotta, Sam Elliott, Andrew Dice Clay, Dave Chappelle
Synopsis: A movie star helps a young singer/actress find fame, even as age and alcoholism send his own career into a downward spiral.

Where to watch? iTunes.

When the movie initially starts, you would just think “Oh not you again” and then the magic happens. Bradley Cooper had the guts to sneak up in the movie and snap you by taking your attention away. Even if there’s no disguise in the film when compared to its origin, this actor who turned into a director has managed to bring a fresh approach to this third remake of the original A Star is Born. The film is full of soul-stirring music, skyrocketing drama, intense love, and heartbreak. The director has done an outstanding job in dumping the Hollywood formulaic shit and has stuck to the raw, scrappy and the lived-in tale. It almost came as a shock when we see Lady Gaga performing in the park while integrating it with the original songs. Cooper reappears as a Star as the X generation witnessed him for the brilliant actor that he is! Both the actors have successfully knocked the ball out of the court with ease.

However, when it comes to the Oscar; the chances of the film missing the Best Picture and Cooper missing the Best Director is nose divided. Sometimes, when the film has come too early there is a high probability of being everyone’s favorite only to create its own harm later. This is how it went with ‘A Star is Born’, during the Golden Globe when it has been nominated for the Best Drama. The film has touched shaky grounds and it went on to miss the PGA. Before we knew, I think the film will end up having only one Academy Award, for the Best Song.

#3 BlackkKlansman:

Director: Spike Lee
Starring: John David Washington, Adam Driver, Laura Harrier
Synopsis: The plot revolves around an African-American cop from Colorado who goes on to infiltrate the local Klu Klux Klan and later become the leader of the local chapter.

Where to watch? Prime Rentals and iTunes

Spike Lee has come to you with the galvanizing movie of the year, BlackkKlansman. This movie has been put up there as the galvanizing one of the year, given how Malcolm X in the pantheon of the Joint game changers. For the start, this movie gets you hot-blooded about the toxic racism and how people have been tolerating it in various fields. This film is believed to be made based on the true story, by Ron Stallworth. Ron Stallworth is the first African -American cop who has been a part of the Colorado Springs Police, as the film shows how he has managed to infiltrate the Ku Klux Klan. As a part of the undercover operation, he goes inside the Klan and starts screwing them. The movie is set in 1970, but the filmmaker doesn’t just want us to dust the past off. In this movie, he uses the cry of ‘America first’ in order to rocket this film into a rancid hatred existing in the Trump era.

The director wanted to explore a lot of socio-cultural issues in this movie including media hype, crime patrol, urban poverty, and racism. The man who has made some important films in the past years including Malcolm X, 25th hour and Do the Right Thing has made a come back with this movie which turned out to be exciting. The movie is the second most important in the list of Oscars 2019 Best Picture Nominations. Because of the Spike Lee factor, it has a huge probability of winning the Oscar if at all Roma misses succeeding.

#4 The Favourite:

Director: Yorgos Lanthimos
Starring:  Olivia Colman, Rachel Weisz, Emma Stone
Synopsis: In early 18th century England, a frail Queen Anne (Colman) occupies the throne and her close friend Lady Sarah (Weisz) governs the country in her stead. When a new servant Abigail (Stone) arrives, her charm endears her to Sarah.

Where to watch? Fox Searchlight.

Olivia Colman has been considered as an overrated actress who could not do better and that’s when she came to us as a lead, with the uproarious dialogue in The Favourite. As Queen Anne, Britain’s emotionally wounded and desperate head, she excelled in the 18th century Bizarre black comedy. The Favourite is an interesting tale which has been souped up with plotting and intrigue that you will not want to turn your head away even for a moment. It has long corridors, brilliant facades, clean elevations, clavichords, wigs, and wonderful accents. This comedy-drama is based on the story of Sarah, the Duchess of Marlborough who competed with Abigail, her cousin who is a Baroness Masham. With all her emotional issues, she creates a dysfunctional love triangle oozing with political and sexual preferences as she struggles with the mother issues. The duelists of this story are played by Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz, the two emotional girls.

Yorgos Lanthimos, who has directed the Dogtooth took an entirely different turn with this historical dramedy in a way that none has expected her to do that. The surprising thing about The Favourite is that it has done so well that it has been considered as an Oscar contender. The film is full of strong plot, strong performances and a stronger screenplay which is why it has checked all the boxes to be in the list of nominations. Even though there are no political undertones in the film, it is tied with Roma when it comes to the number of nominations.

#5 Green Book:

Director: Peter Farrelly
Starring: Linda Cardellini, Viggo Mortensen, Mahershala Ali
Synopsis: A working-class Italian-American bouncer becomes the driver of an African-American classical pianist on a tour of venues through the 1960s American South.

Where to watch? Uphe.

There are too many pleasures that one can find in Green Book, the new film made by Peter Farrelly. After watching the film, you will realize that it is not a surprise given you have remembered his previous works starting from Dumb and Dumber to his best There’s Something About Mary. He is also known for his underrated remakes The Heartbreak Kid or the Fever Bitch. The interesting thing about this film is that the material edges have made him get seriously minded rather than just beautifully displaying the friendship story between Donald Shirley, the pianist and Tony Lip, his driver. The film is set back in the 1960s when Tony is in dire need of employment as the club in which he works is under renovation. This is when Donald starts looking for a driver who would take him towards the south for a tour. Donald is aware of all the troubles he would face in various locations because of the color of the skin and therefore he wants someone who is not only a driver but also the protector. Tony is not his choice because he is extremely rude and has problematic racist views. But the muscle he carries is needed by Donald and hence their bond develops!

Green Book has been beating the movies like A Star is Born, as it has won the prize at TIFF People Choice Awards. The movie is simple, easy and extremely friendly. However, after watching the movie once, I have also realized that there’s a lot of stuff in the movie that can lead us to hate it. The film has managed to create a lot of controversies which is why we are not sure about its winning choices. Even without the controversies, we are not still sure about how the movie would go but well there’s a chance that it can pull things off.  Given how it is a tale of friendship between a white and a black, the probability of its winning can’t be waived off.

#6 Bohemian Rhapsody:

Director: Bryan Singer
Starring: Rami Malek, Lucy Boynton, Gwilym Lee
Synopsis: The story of the legendary rock music band Queen and lead singer Freddie Mercury, leading up to their famous performance at Live Aid (1985).

Where to watch? Fox Movies.

“We don’t follow formulas,” say the members of Queen, circa 1975, but anyone hoping for this Freddie Mercury biopic to take its cue from the rock-operatic masterpiece of the title will be disappointed.

Rami Malek has added a tone of his own in order to give this excellent performance. As a result, the movie feels a lot less pioneering than just a musical odyssey that covers the story of a band. It seems personal because of the display of the publicized troubles of Freddie Queen through the years. Malek has stepped in to play the Sacha Baron Cohen, while Dexter Fletcher replaced the Bryan Singer, who is departed. This movie is an achievement because it got made finally. Despite all the drama and the tension that it had, they have finally completed it with the formula that just asks to get the damn thing finished without any controversies and drawbacks.

Why is this movie in the list of Oscar nominations, if you ask? It has got the wide support from the industry as it held a place in the list of PGA nominees for the Best Film. It has done amazingly well at the box office with huge collections to everyone’s surprise. It has won the Best Picture Award at Golden Globe. All these statistics prove that Bohemian Rhapsody has managed to defy all the odds in order to stand tall in this list. The film has managed to come so far without any support of the award procrastinators or the critics’ groups while being a case study of its own. Will this film win the Oscar? we never know!

#7 Vice:

Director: Adam McKay
Starring: Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Steve Carell, Sam Rockwell, Bill Pullman, and Alison Pill
Synopsis: The story of Dick Cheney, the most powerful Vice President in history, and how his policies changed the world as we know it.

Where to watch? Fmovies.

Vice is a nihilist, entertaining yet beautifully written movie especially when it deals with the relationship between Cheney and his daughter, Mary. Mary is a gay woman who campaigns for same-sex marriage. His final interaction with her in the movie has somehow reminded me of Citizen Kane setting fire to the sled of the childhood saying that he did not like the winter sports equipment, that is named after flowers. The film has a huge surge towards awards seasons and is recognized by many. If we consider the political factor, it has a lot in it along with the liberal nostalgia. The movie has many Republican villains who were rational enough to stay out of limelight even after doing horrible horrible things.  Vile as a movie is a Powerpoint biopic, a comedy filled Ted Talk that breaks all the four walls. It has many voice-overs that are borrowed from Michael Moore to fill the gaps in between.

The main reason why Vice has gained so much attention is that of Christian Bale. One glimpse of his incredible transformation for this role and you will not ask why it deserves to be on the Oscars list. Other than the transformation of the master chameleon, the film has a lot of other things like the stellar cast and the Dick Chaney’s original storyline, as intriguing as it. McKay along with Carell and Bale has made the crispier film with wry humor and have repeated this magic all over again. While The Big Short fell short of winning an Oscar, the Vice is too divisive and is not sure to win. However, given that it is nominated and has a political background, we never know how the jury would react to this movie. With an intriguing plot, it has its fair share of chances.

#8 Black Panther:

Director: Ryan Coogler
Starring: Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong’o
Synopsis: T’Challa, heir to the hidden but advanced kingdom of Wakanda, must step forward to lead his people into a new future and must confront a challenger from his country’s past.

Where to watch? Netflix.

Ryan Coogler has managed to convert the superhero drama into a natural tale while featuring the best people out there. The film has royal intrigue, interesting performances, spectacular art direction, heavy action sequences and also an unexpected emotional depth. All the characters and scenes are etched with so much of relevance and care that you wouldn’t feel a single frame to be unnecessary. Right from the crowning of T’Challa as the king to his uncertainty of sharing the Wakanda resources with the world, there are just a lot of things to appreciate in this film. There are many pulsing scores and soundtracks (especially the one from Kendrick Lamar), the surreal cinematography by Rachel Morrison, the gorgeous costumes representing the tribal culture and beating all of them, the production design. Unlike other Marve movies, there is not a lot of comedy and banter but the movie has subtle light-hearted moments that glue the plot.

Black Panther has already been Marvel’s pride by being the first superhero film to receive the nomination for the Best Picture. After smashing all the box office records, it managed to win the critics hearts across the globe. So, this is obvious that the film would get nominated for the Best Picture but the chances of it winning is nill. For years, we know that the Academy is detesting the idea of making a superhero film win the Best Picture Award.

Looking through the possibilities, it is clear that the Best Picture will either go to Roma, A Star is Born or The Favourite. All the other films are exceptional on their own, but considering the thought process of the Academy for years; they can be struck off from the list of probable.
