I have to tell you guys, zombie films are my favorite films. Over the years many new innovative ideas have given zombie films a new direction may it very intense action films to comedy. And comedy and zombies are the best mix, a little humor is essential in the already gory, run-for-your-life scenarios. Always been a huge fan of zombie films and I present you guys with the most popular and loved zombie films.

Here is a curated list of the best zombie films ever made.

#12. Dawn of the Dead (1978)

Director: George A. Romero

Cast: David Emge, Ken Foree, Scott Reiniger, Gaylen Ross

Dawn of the Dead, is the second film in George A. Romero’sNight of the Living Dead” series. The film focuses on the survivors of an outbreak in the city of Philadelphia, which causes the reanimation of the dead that prey on human flesh. The survivors, two SWAT policemen, a traffic reporter and his t.v executive girlfriend seek refuge in a secluded shopping mall and decide to stay there till the crisis is over. They barricade themselves in the shopping mall while also defending themselves from the zombies and a biker gang who wants the place for themselves. The film differ from its predecessor as it is full of more blood and death shown in color which the Night of the Living Dead showed in black and white.

What is the basic for making a zombie film? A virus outbreak has been an all time reason, right? Filmmakers must come up with fresh stories to keep it interesting. Same with Dead Snow and I swear it will not disappoint you. The film follows a group of medical students travelling to a remote Arctic mountain for holidays. They are visited by a local resident who tells them a horrifying story about the area where once the Nazi soldiers were driven away by the people of the area and they froze to death. The students dismissed the story but are soon surrounded by an army of Nazi zombies who have come back to seek revenge. The film is cleverly made mixed with humor and sex and double the horror because: Nazi zombies.

#10. Warm Bodies (2013)

Cast: Nicholas Hoult, Teresa Palmer, Analeigh Tipton, John Malkovich

In the history of zombies films, zombies are always the bad guys, well think again, Warm Bodies takes things a different route. Based on the Issac Marion’s novel of the same name is a sweet, warm romantic comedy film tells the story from the perspective of a zombie. The film centers around R, a zombie lives in an abandoned airport with other zombies. He meets Julie during a hunting party and weirdly becomes very protective of her. Julie is terrified at first but soon soften towards R. With the growing friendship between them, R slowly get back his human characteristics, like dreaming. Soon the other zombies have changed too, but with the other zombie eating creatures ‘Bonies’ and the living soldiers wage a war against the good zombies, Julie and R must convince her friends to help the zombies become human again instead of killing them. As this film is one of a kind, you will thoroughly enjoy this one and will surely bring a smile on your face instead of tears and horror. I must say Nicholas Hoult is a very sexy zombie. Watch out ladies, he will surely steal your hearts with his acting.

#9. 28 Days Later (2002)

Considered one of the best zombie film, 28 Days Later is a British post-apocalyptic horror film shows the aftermath of a viral outbreak in England leaving flesh eating zombies roaming freely in the streets. The film centers around our protagonist, Jim who wakes up to an abandoned hospital and search for people in now deserted London. He manages to find other survivors and struggles to get out of the city to a military camp at Manchester where they are promised a safe haven, but what lies ahead of them is just the beginning of horror. 28 Days Later gained critical acclaimed after its release and became a quick favorite among the zombie movie lovers.

#8. Shaun of the Dead (2004)

Cast: Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Kate Ashfield, Lucy Davis, Dylan Moran, Penelope Wilton, Bill Nighy

Shaun of the Dead, is a romantic comedic zombie film, Simon Pegg stars as Shaun, a directionless Londoner who spends his days at his pub miserable after his break up and complains about his life to his friends at the pub. Shaun vows to win back his girlfriend. What better time to show his girlfriend, that he is responsible man than in the middle of a zombie apocalypse. When the dead has come back to London to wreak havoc, Shaun and his best friends Ed decides to turn his life around by being useful in saving his mother and winning back his girlfriend. With just a cricket bat and his loyal best friend he sets out to save anyone he can and take shelter at his pub, The Winchester till the crisis is over. Look out for the scene when Shaun and his crew walk like the zombies to avoid getting bitten to get across a horde of zombies. The film received critical and commercial success and became a cult classic. The film pokes fun at other zombie film cliches also honoring them in many scenes throughout the film.

#7. Day of the Dead (1985)

Director: George A. Romero

Cast: Lori Cardille, Terry Alexander, Joe Pilato Richard Liberty, Jarlath Conroy

Day of the Dead, is the third film in Romero’s Night of the Living Dead series. As the previous films in the series shows how human tries every thing to survive in the zombie-filled world. This film centers around human survivors in an underground bunkers mostly human scientists devoted to finding a cure to the zombie apocalypse with soldiers protecting them while they continue their research. Dr. Logan, the lead scientist also known as ‘Frankenstein’ has a different approach towards the zombies. His research includes taming zombies, and he is proud of ‘Bub’, who he has tamed and shows it to the Major Rhodes to gain his cooperation. During a mishandling, the zombies escapes and began attacking the humans. When the doctor is killed, Bub expresses sadness and sets out to avenge the death of the doctor. At the end, the remaining survivors who are able to escape the zombies, gets to the surface, boards a helicopter and fly towards a deserted zombie-free island where they plan to spend the rest of their lives.

#6. Zombieland (2009)

Cast: Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Emma Stone, Abigail Breslin

Zombieland, is a highly recommended post-apocalyptic comedy horror film focusing on a zombie apocalypse that has taken over America. Jesse Eisenberg is a dorky student goes on a search for his parents after a mad cow virus has turned half of the population to flesh eating zombies. He befriends a tough red neck WoodyHerrelson who is obsessed with twinkies and reluctantly offers Jesse a ride. Both of them meet two sisters (Emma and Abigail) who are con artists, who cons them and steal their car. The due finds a Hummer loaded with weapons and sets out to find out the sisters. While journeying through America they encounters Bill Murray’s house. They all began bonding despite their strict rules of not getting attached to anyone. Jesse and Emma are attracted to each other, Woody and Abigail forms an unlikely bond. They all decides to stay together and find a place free from the zombies. The film offers both humor and violence. With the innocence of Jesse, tough Woody and the cunning sisters the film is great to watch, you will enjoy every bit of it and won’t be bored to watch and again. Zombieland is my all time favorite zombie film and it never bores me.

#5. Resident Evil (2002)

Cast: Milla Jovovich, Michelle Rodriguez, Eric Mabius, James Purefoy, Martin Crewes, Colin Salmon

Resident Evil is the most popular sci-fi zombie film ever made. The film is based on the Capcom survival horror video game and is the first installment of the Resident Evil film series. The film centers around the protagonist, Alice who wakes up with no memories to find the outbreak of the deadly T-virus in the world’s largest secret underground research center, the Umbrella corporation. The T-virus has deadly effects on the people and turned the whole staff and the scientists in the underground facility into flesh eating creatures. Due to the outbreak, the supercomputer that controls the facility goes genocide to control the virus from getting out of the facility. Alice together with a group of soldiers from the Umbrella Corporation must fight the flesh eating creatures, the mutated animals that got expose to the virus and shut down the supercomputer, Red Queen before it kills everyone, whether infected or not and return safely to the surface. Alice slowly regains her memory back and realizes she is infected by the virus, but instead of turning like the others, she gains superpower and aides the soldiers to shut down the Red Queen. Though the film has received mixed reviews it went on to become a box office hit. The Resident Evil film series is the highest grossing zombie film series. Do watch the whole series to see the evolution of Alice’s superpowers and her fight against the zombies and the Umbrella Corporation.

#4. Train To Busan (2016)

Cast: Gong Yoo, Yeon Sang-ho, Jung Yu-mi

Train To Busan, is a South Korean zombie apocalypse action thriller, the film follows a father fighting the zombies to protect his daughter. The film entirely takes place in a train, where a father is travelling with his daughter to Busan. As a zombie apocalypse breaks out in the country, the passengers in the train are trapped with the zombies. To protect their loved ones, strangers becomes friends and together they fight against the zombies. The passengers struggle to keep it together to Busan, a southern city free of the virus or as everyone hoped. The film exhibits performance from the actors who were brilliant in every aspects whether it was fighting the zombies or fighting back tears as to see their loved ones turned into vicious creatures in front of their eyes. Though the plot is innovative, i was pretty disappointed as the film never showed the actual reason of the sudden zombie breakout, as a zombie film lover i am always curious of how the virus spreads and the most interesting part, the search for a cure. Anyway, the actions will keep you on the edge till the end which has made this film, one of the critically acclaimed zombie film. The film is also one of the best South Korean film and is the eight highest grossing film in South Korea.

#3. The Return Of The Living Dead (1985)

Director: Dan O’ Bannon

Cast: Clu Gulager, James Karen, Don Calfa

A cult classic, The Return of the Living Dead is a comedy zombie film, set in Kentucky, where a dangerous military chemical accidentally gets released into the atmosphere turning the corpses in a nearby cemetery into living dead that terrorizes the territory hunting for their favorite food, human brains. The film is quite different as it shows the zombies craving only for human brains and not human flesh. The film was a huge success and has spawned four sequels over time.

#2. Night of the Living Dead (1968)

Director: George A. Romero

Cast: Judith O’Dea, Duane Jones

A cult classic, and the first of George A. Romero’s Night of the Living Dead zombie film series. This black and white film tells the story of the dead returning to life as human flesh eating zombies in a rural Pennsylvania, apparently caused by radiation from a fallen satellite. Several people are forced to take refugee in a farmhouse to save themselves from the hungry zombies. As time goes by the people get more impatient and chaos ensues among them which eventually lead to their tragic downfall. The film although received negative reviews, it was successful in the box office and led to five films and considered best among the zombie films.

#1. World War Z (2013)

Director: Marc Forster

Cast: Brad Pitt, Mireille Enos, James Badge Dale, Matthew Fox

This is the best zombie film ever made, as it shows realistic version of a zombie apocalypse and struggles to find a cure. Brad Pitt stars as Gerry a former UN employee stuck in a zombie apocalypse that has taken over the world. He finds himself in a worldwide search to gather more information about the origin of the virus and hopefully a cure to this infection before time runs out. The last scenes of the film is nerve wrecking as the zombies are cornering Brad Pitt. I don’t want to give out spoiler alerts. It’s too good and you will get real satisfaction at the end. The film receive positive reviews and hold the highest earning zombie film of all time. There is news about a sequel in production and God I’m very excited.
